About the Project

Welcome to “Ryan Glanzer’s Best Picture Reviews!”  In November 2008, my fiancee Lauren and I decided to begin the project of watching every movie to win the Best Picture award.  Lauren is a longtime Netflix subscriber, and at the time of the start of our project, only three of the titles were unavailable (1928′s Wings, 1933′s Cavalcade, and 1940′s Rebecca.)

The inspiration behind our project began after watching the 2008 Academy Awards and seeing this montage with a short clip from each of the winners.  While watching, a friend of ours claimed to have seen well over half of the winners.  We knew he was lying about seeing titles such as 1948′s Hamlet and 1951′s An American in Paris, and I think that there inspired us to actually do the project ourselves.

After watching 1929′s The Broadway Melody, I wrote a review on my personal blog.  In fact, from then on, I reviewed every winner on the blog until my old readers, who wanted to read about my day-to-day life, got bored and demanded a separate blog.  Thus, this blog was born.

I try to keep an updated ranking of all the winners, which changes sometimes when time goes by, and I realize a certain movie may have been better or worse than I initially gave it credit for.  From 1929-1979, my favorite so far is 1973′s The Sting, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, with 1946′s The Best Years of Our Lives in a close second.

I hope you will enjoy following along as Lauren and I plow through the rest of the project!  I may not be a great movie critic, but I write about what I know, what I liked, and what seems absurd (Honore’s song about loving little girls from Gigi, for one).
